What’s cooking, good looking??!!??

This weekend I’ve been helping Mum in the kitchen, where I made a Greek veggie dish, called Briam.

Have a nosey at the video, it includes the recipe for lots of veggies you could grow yourself!

Bon appetizer!

The dish was nice, but I’m not a fan of aubergines. I think they’re like coriander, you either love ’em or hate ’em!!

I’ve really got into cooking recently. I’ve increased the range of dishes I can cook by myself, beyond super noodles!

Cooking reminds me of chemistry at school, where you can see proper chemical reactions. Like when you crack and cook an egg; you can never return it to its original form. Learning simple cooking is a good life skill too

We’ve started to think about what we’re going to grow in the veg beds this year. In fact I was looking at herb seeds with my mum this morning as she fancies growing tarragon this year. Food tastes even nicer, when you’ve grown and cooked it yourself!

Battling with my conscience

I’ve had a bit of a foodie dilemma this weekend. Sarah – gardening teacher, moved to a farm in Scotland – sent us some pork from her first lot of pigs. The problem was, that I’d helped feed, tickle and walk these pigs, so the thought of eating them made me feel uncomfortable. I’m not vegetarian (and I don’t think I ever will be, I like bacon too much) and I want to make sure that the meat I eat is from animals that have had a good life and I know these pigs have.

A long time ago I was asking my mum questions about food terms like free range, organic, sustainable, ethical, etc… they are difficult questions to answer. But there’s lots of talk about us kids having a connection with food, so we need to have a good understanding of where it comes from and what it’s all about.

Well, I can tell you the pork was delicious! My mum marinated the pork in garlic, lemon juice and herbs, a bit like another Greek dish called, Souvlaki.

Good luck Sarah, I think you’re on to a winner with your roast pork dinners! Sarah has been writing a blog too, about her new life on the farm; here’s the link

Have you done any cooking or gardening this weekend?

Have a great week folks!

Well done for making that dish George I am very happy now I have the recipe loved this dish, you are right I am the same not sure about Aubergines, but so enjoyed it when your mum cooked it for Kulwant’s party mmmmm. I also worry about the meat we eat, but if your careful where you buy it and how it was looked after and feed well I think that’s all we can do apart from not eating meat at all. And I must say we eat a lot of veggie meals.
